I 1801 udregner Gauss, for astronomen Zach, hvor en mindre planet, Ceres, er placeret i rummet. Gauss beregninger er lidt unøjagtige, hvilket skyldes hans egen approximation - mindste kvadraters metode.
Gauss bliver født den 30 april 1777 i Brunswick og dør den 23. februar 1855 i Göttingen.
I 1788 påbegynder Gauss sin uddannelse - hvor han lærer tysk og latin. I 1792 får han et stipendie og læser videre på Brunswick Collegium Carolinum. Her opdager Gauss bl.a. binomial theoremet samt aritmetrisk og geometrisk gennemsnit.
